Why Bariatric Foodie Hearts Torani

These are my "most frequently used" flavors. There are more in my kitchen though!
There are three questions I get asked pretty often about sugar-free syrups:
  1. What do you use them for?
  2. What’s the difference between Torani, Davinci, and other syrups?
  3. If I’m gonna try Torani syrups, what flavor should I try first?
Call me ambitious…but I’m going to try to answer all these questions in one (hopefully not too long) blog post!

What do I (Nik) use sugar-free syrups for?

Left: Mocha Toffee Twist Hot Protein Drink, Top: Crustless Pumpkin Cheesecake with Salted Caramel Pecan Topping, Bottom: S'mores Protein Pudding Pie
The better question is what don’t I use them for. And the answer to that would be very few things! I use them in protein shakes, in yogurt, in pudding, in coffee, in baked stuff, in dessert. They can even be used as an addition to savory sauces! (Sorry I haven’t memorialized those recipes yet but soon!)

Here are a few helpful tips when using sugar-free syrups in general:
  • If you are baking using sugar-free syrups, remember that it would be considered a wet ingredient and, thus, you’d need to either adjust your other wet ingredients accordingly OR adjust your cook time (usually longer cook time, possibly lower temperature depending on what it is). In general, the syrups don’t have a big impact on the final texture of a baked product.
  • Be sure to use a flavor that stands out from whatever you are using. So if you are making…say…chocolate protein pudding, a nice Salted Caramel or S’mores flavored syrup would work well with that. Don’t use flavors that blend into each other. You won’t taste them and it will seem like a waste!

What’s the difference between Torani, Davinci and other syrups?

The main difference is their flavor offerings. Davinci makes some flavors that Torani does not (like sugar-free Kahlua and sugar-free Buttered Rum) and Torani makes some flavors Davinci does not (such as my absolute FAVORITE, sugar-free S’mores and sugar-free Salted Caramel). There are many other brands of sugar-free syrups, including those carried at your local Starbucks. There can also be differences in how syrups are sweetened. Both Torani and Davinci are generally sweetened with Sucralose (the main ingredient in Splenda). There are other syrups sweetened with other things such as aspartame, xylitol and stevia.

If I’m gonna try Torani syrups, what flavor should I try first?

Valid question. Many of us don’t have the budget for an unlimited supply (but we can dream…sigh…) so investing in the right bottle is important. Here are a few suggestions (all sugar-free flavors):

Five Reasons to "Celebrate" ENS 2 in 1 Protein & Calcium Bars!

So here's something I hear a lot, especially from new-new post-ops: "I just don't know how I'm supposed to get all my vitamins in plus protein. It's too much!"

Although I'm not in that boat anymore (happy dance), I can relate. During the first six months after my surgery I had extreme restriction. I would take my vitamins and they'd actually fill me up. Ugh, it was horrible. I always felt like every time I got one area under control (protein, vitamins, water, exercise) another would fall behind!

Well our friends over at Celebrate Vitamins are trying to make things easier for us by making products that do double duty. This week, as a prize sponsor for the Bariatric Foodie Pledge, Celebrate is offering up a stash of their ENS 2-in-1 Protein and Calcium Bars (btw, here's my official review of the bars). I wanted to know more about these bars, so I had a chat with my buddy over at Celebrate, Shannon Kisha. Here's what she has to say.

Nik: Hey, Shannon! We already know Celebrate for its many vitamin offerings, but many Foodies might not know you provide other products. Can you tell us what else you have to offer?

Shannon: Sure Nik!  We’re definitely known for our bariatric multivitamins, calcium and iron, but what some patients may not know or be familiar with is our combination products.  We offer meal replacements, protein shakes, drink mixes and our newest product: protein bars!  But they’re actually a protein AND calcium bar, which is pretty cool, because it does double duty (I’ll get to that later).

Nik: What made Celebrate decide to make the 2-in-1 protein and calcium bar?

Shannon: So, like I mentioned, it’s a protein AND calcium bar, not the norm for a protein bar.   We recognized that getting the proper amount of calcium citrate was challenging for patients, so we created several products that combine 2, 3 or 4 different vitamins and supplements (all including calcium) that bariatric patients need to get in daily.  We call this our ENS line, which stands for Essential Nutrient System.

Currently we have our Celebrate ENS + Protein 4 in 1 Protein Shake (combining a multivitamin, calcium citrate, protein and fiber), Celebrate 3 in 1 Drink Mix (combining a multivitamin, calcium citrate, and fiber), and our ENS 2 in 1 Protein & Calcium Bar.  The idea behind this is to be able to provide the patient with a supplement that has the ability to decrease the amount of pills / doses needed in a day, and always including calcium.  For example:  our ENS 2 in 1 Protein  & Calcium Bar provides 15 grams of protein and 500 mg of calcium citrate.  Your getting an added dose of calcium in daily, which is one less calcium pill, and eating a protein packed snack that will help curb your hunger and cravings and get you closer to your daily recommendations!

Nik:  So, what's in the bars? Are they sugar-free, gluten-free, etc.?

Shannon: The 2 in 1 Bars are a low calorie, low sugar snack, with only 5 grams of sugar!  They have 15 grams of soy protein isolate and score a 1 on the PDCAAS scale, which means they are a complete protein and provide all of the essential amino acids.  They have 500 mg of calcium citrate, as well as 333 IU of vitamin D3 and 50 mg of magnesium.  We use sugar alcohols and Sucralose to sweeten the bar.  And of course, they’re gluten-free.

Nik: Both the current bars have chocolate in them. Are there new bars coming that have other flavors?

Shannon: Right now we have two delicious flavors; Peanut Butter – Chocolate Crunch and Caramel – Chocolate Crunch!  Yum!  No new flavors yet, but you never know what we might think of next!

Nik: So tell us...which bar is your personal favorite?

Shannon: I’m a peanut butter fanatic! So you know my personal fav is the Peanut Butter – Chocolate Crunch! I love, love, love my peanut butter! Did I mention I like peanut butter?  Haha!

Three of this week's Pledgers will win a prize pack from Celebrate Vitamins that will include a box of ENS 2-in-1 Protein and Calcium bars! So be sure to check them out and, of course, show them love on social media!

Five Ways I Use BiPro USA Whey Protein

BiPro USA is one of this week's Bariatric Foodie Pledge sponsors. So this week I wanted to highlight a few ways I use their whey. (Corny, yes, I know...)

You know how they say necessity is the mother of invention? Well it's also the mother of adaptation! Before 2013, I used a brand of unflavored whey called Any Whey. It was discontinued but you'll see the name of that whey sprinkled throughout this blog (takes a while to do name replacements in blog posts - especially a blog that's a few years old like this one!). Well I needed a new unflavored whey option so I tried many, many, many samples and I liked BiPro the best.

Why? Mainly because most other proteins that claim to be unflavored are not. They usually have some sort of faint vanilla taste or smell or, worse, that trademark "monkey butt" aroma of protein. Ugh! BiPro didn't have any of that, plus it's low calorie (80 calories per serving), NO carb, and of course it's high protein (20g protein per serving) and, probably most importantly for me, mixed seamlessly into anything I use it in.

Keep in mind BiPro also has two other flavors (Chocolate and French Vanilla) and this week's prize winners will have their choice, but I figured I'd show you five ways I like to use unflavored, which is my favorite offering!

In Protein Hot Drinks

I love myself a protein hot drink in the winter (here's how I make them without the lumps). A lot of times I use my CLICK Espresso Protein Drink for the lovely espresso flavor but I want to amp up the protein factor. So I add a serving of BiPro unflavored whey. Doing that gives me the protein I need and doesn't interfere with the taste I love.

To get the recipe for the above drink (my Mocha Toffee Twist), download the free "50 Ways to Click" e-book!

Here's a link to check out "The Bariatric Foodie Guide to Perfect Protein Shakes" which has lots and lots and LOTS more ideas!

In Chili
(No pic because...well the pic sucks!)

Necessity was the mother of this idea too. My youngest daughter decided she did not want to eat meat anymore. She just can't bear the thought of consuming animals (this perplexes me but I respect it). My main worry was how she would get enough protein to have a healthy balanced diet. Now that I'm more educated I know it's perfectly possible for her to get enough protein without protein supplements, but by then the habit of putting extra protein in things like soup and chili had formed. She doesn't mind it and it also makes it possible for me to enjoy a meal with her and not worry about my protein needs, which are different based on my labs.

In Dessert

Especially cheesecake! I've used vanilla protein before (in fact, I think the recipe link  here probably calls for it) but when I do that it comes out too far on the vanilla side. I like my cheesecake to be...well, cheesy! So I add BiPro instead which preserves that classic cheesecake flavor I love.

While the above is a totally share-worthy Crustless Pumpkin Pecan Protein Cheesecake, here's a link to my individual serving cheesecake recipe

In Protein Baked Oatmeal

I love baking oatmeal. I first heard of it during a visit to the Amish market (I love the Amish!). Some of my recipes call for vanilla protein (something about chocolate protein + oatmeal = no for me...I can't explain it). Adding unflavored BiPro whey allows me to concentrate on the flavor of my protein baked oatmeal. The photo above is of my Nutty Apple Baked Protein Oatmeal and it has the wonderful flavors of pumpkin, fall spices and nuts. In this one I will say I love either French Vanilla OR unflavored BiPro. I tend to use the unflavored when I want to put a smear of something on a slice of baked oatmeal.

Need more breakfast ideas? Check out "The Bariatric Foodie Breakfast Book," featuring more baked protein oatmeal ideas, regular protein oatmeal, egg scrambles, even pancakes!

In Fruit Smoothies

I love a good smoothie as much as the next person but putting vanilla protein in a fruit smoothie has always seemed bizarre to me. It makes it taste like a fruit custard instead of fruit. If I wanted a fruit custard, I'd make a fruit custard!

This Tropical Sunrise smoothie uses BiPro whey to let the fruity flavor shine through.

So there you have it! (I say that a lot.) My five favorite ways to use BiPro USA whey protein powder. Shannon's Foodie Review of Livliga Dishware

From time to time I ask Foodies to try out a product, so you can hear from someone besides me! Since Livliga Home is providing a free set of dishes to the Bariatric Foodie Pledge grand prize, I thought we have to have a Foodie review! I'm so thankful long-time Foodie Shannon A. was available to give them a try. In the interest of full disclosure, Livliga did provide Shannon with a set of its Halsa dishware to perform this review, however Shannon was not paid for her review. Read on to hear what she has to say!

Hello Everyone, Shannon here! Last fall, Nikki asked me if I would be willing to do a review of dinnerware made by Livliga, which makes dishware catered to people who are trying eat healthy. I was excited try out the dishes and to document my findings, not only for myself but also my husband who is a Type 1 diabetic. His diabetes requires much control and he tries very hard to measure and understand his serving sizes.

Deciding on a dish pattern...

After being asked to review the Livliga dishes, the first thing I had to decide was which dish pattern I’d use. After looking at their website, I initially fell in love with the Halsa pattern. The delicate blue pattern matched my kitchen perfectly, and when I read up on the product realized that the colors were chosen for a specific purpose. These colors, as opposed to others, help us to eat more slowly, to be calmer during meal times. In that sense we stay calm we eat slower, we enjoy our mealtime,  the portions on the plate are enough to make us satisfied.

The plates themselves are not too heavy or bulky, and though I expected them to be heavier, I was pleasantly surprised when they were not.  The circular patterns on the plates are not just meant to be aesthetic, but each circle and line on the dinnerware serves to help portion the meal. On the underside of the large plate, there is what I called my “treasure map” which shows what each circle represents and what serving it holds. There are circles for a serving of meat, vegetable, carbohydrate, and a sauce, etc.  The bowl and cup have lines on the inside representing a proper portions of liquid measurement.

Using the visual guides can be tricky...

After washing the plates in my dishwasher (and they held up to the dishwasher just fine) I used them to serve a meal. This is where things got tricky. I had a hard time remembering which circle for which portion of food. In fact, on several occasions I know I put the wrong kind of food on the wrong circle. Until I got a little more familiar with the plate and its layout, I used the treasure map pretty often. That was a tiny bit frustrating because it meant we could only plate one meal at a time, one of us was always waiting for the other to finish looking at the guide on the bottom of the plate. I think this is easily remedied with a separate guide that can be used to initially help plate the meals.

This dinnerware isn’t completely foolproof either. The place markings show a space, not necessarily a definitive serving size of something. The meat portion area of the plate can hold 2-6 ounces of meat.  Understandably if you are looking into portion control dinnerware you aren’t going to try to stack your serving of mashed potatoes eight inches off the plate in a perfect two inch circle, but who is to say without still fully measuring your food with a measuring device such as a measure cup or scale, just how much food is on the plate?

...but the visual cues generally work (at least for non-ops!)

When food is on the plates, when you use the general portion guides they give, they look full. I have to admit that made me realize how the mind can fool you. Now my plate didn't always look full because I don’t often eat the carbohydrates I make for my husband at dinner time, but in general I felt satisfied after eating from the plates. The lipped plate, the closeness of the circles on the base of the plate, those all help get the mind in the right place to feel satisfied after a meal.

Where I had the most trouble most often was with meals such as casseroles. Living in the Midwest, casseroles are a diet staple. But from a portion standpoint, I was always flummoxed as to how to use the plates effectively, since everything was mixed together. I found it hard to estimate what I was eating.

Now I understand that is the bowl could probably be used for this purpose, and I used the bowls frequently with my stews and soups…but even then getting eight ounces of soup in a bowl still really didn’t help me know what portion of that meal was meat, which was carb, and which was vegetable, and perhaps that’s ok.

For me it wasn’t,  I was having a hard time reconciling the idea that I was going back to get another few pieces of meat  because I knew that there wasn’t enough in the bowl when I served myself my initial portion.

Cost Considerations

The dish set retails price for 59.99. I don’t think that it is an outlandish amount of money to spend on nice dinnerware…that being said, how often do many of us use our nice dinnerware?  For my family and lifestyle, I don’t know that the price is worth it. My children are young and very rarely eat the same meal as my husband and I. They also have different nutritional needs than an adult. I would like to mention that Livliga does have a set of Kid plates, so there is an option for your young ones, but for us it still is not worth it.

Final Verdict

I really wanted to love this dinnerware as a post weight loss surgery patient, but in all honesty, it didn’t help me meet my personal nutritional needs as a bariatric post-op. There will probably never come a time when I would eat a full serving as indicated on the plate of carbohydrates, and my meals are protein heavy, so my plate always felt lopsided.

But I also understand that for some in the WLS community this dinnerware could be a life saver.  If you are a post-op who finds that you can eat more than what you feel that you should, or has a very high tolerance to foods you were warned you might not tolerate well, and it concerns you, Livliga might be the perfect answer for you to keep your portions in control. It really is all about your personal needs.

I should note that my husband found the dishes to be very effective in helping him stay within his portions and keep his blood sugars regulated. And as a lovely set of dinnerware however, I am completely smitten with the Livliga Halsa dinnerware. The Livliga concept is ingenious, it can be effective, and its execution is stylish, trendy, and promising. I anticipate that this company will do quite well in its healthy vibrant living platform.

As another tool in the post-op arsenal, I would give this product a solid B.  A great option for the more seasoned post- op to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but for some newbies this might not be as helpful. However, if your loved ones are looking to exercise greater portion control, be it for diabetes or any other health concerns, this dinnerware is highly effective and I would recommend it!

Bariatric Foodies: Meet Livliga!

Sheila and her husband, and Livliga co-owner, Walter, at the Obesity Action Coalition "Your Weight Matters" Convention.

So I promised this week that I'd have some juicy info about the Bariatric Foodie Pledge "winner takes all" grand prize. You'll notice on the menu to your right the list now includes ONE of the bonus items in the grand prize!

Just a reminder that the grand prize competition will happen the first week of March and is open to pledgers who pledged/checked-in all four weeks of the Bariatric Foodie Pledge.

So now you know one of the grand prizes is from Livliga Home. But just exactly what is Livliga?

I met the folks at Livliga at the Obesity Action Coalition's "Your Weight Matters" Convention in Orlando last year and fell in love with their portion control dishes. I've seen portion control dishes before but they always looked so...obvious. They had the measurements directly on the plate which, to me, screams "I'm on a diet!" What I liked about Livliga is that the portion control is built into the design. To a bystander they look like beautiful dishes. But to you, they are guide maps to balanced eating!

So that we can learn more about this product, I asked co-owner Sheila Dietrich to answer a few questions about Livliga. BUT...you know the best information for us comes from us. I also asked a fellow Foodie, Shannon, to spend a few months using the dishes and report back. I'll post that tomorrow. Until then, here's what Sheila has to say about Livliga.

Nik: How did you come up with the idea to develop Livliga products?

Sheila: I’ve struggled with weight issues all my life. When I became executive director of the American Heart Association in Denver I became more aware of the obesity epidemic and how it affects us all.

I was motivated into action when the Centers for Disease Control made the statement that “we are now living in a generation where parents are going to outlive their children because of obesity.” I’m a mom of three kids, so that pronouncement made me made.

In my opinion there is something critical missing in our tool chest to combat overeating. It turns out our eyes make the decisions about the foods we eat, not our stomachs – positive visual cues have the power to help us control our eating.

That is why Livliga was created--to create an appealing and attractive food environment that supports us, through integrating the psychology of eating, in right-sized eating that actually makes of feel satisfied at the end of a meal.

Nik: So the plates have portion sizes and markers, but post-ops vary on how much they can eat. Do you think your products are still useful to them?

Sheila: Absolutely. We know, according to bariatric patients and bariatric physicians, Livliga is useful to individuals prior to surgery, post-ops and down the road, a few years out, as people begin to eat slightly larger portions.

Prior to surgery our dishes help individuals get used to smaller portions and guides them to right-sized eating. Post surgery individuals have found the side plate is the best one to use, not the dinner plate. Then a few years out all the pieces can be used.

Nik: I've heard a lot of Foodies express that they wish their spouses or kids would start to eat better. For a person with a (air-quote) normal stomach, how do these dishes make a difference?
On the right: a traditional plate. On the left: a Livliga plate.

Sheila: Livliga is all about everyone being in it together. Our designs are a subtle way to improve and control our food environment. Eating healthy is relevant to every one no matter your size, age, or if you are at your ideal weight. The wonderful thing about our plates is they support everyone in healthy eating habits.

The icons on the plate remind us to eat a balanced meal as well as to eat certain foods in certain amounts. Studies actually show that there is a "halo effect" when one person changes their habits to eating less and eating healthier. Not only do they get healthier but they end up influencing the others around them and they get healthier too.

Also, other research shows that long-term results for living a healthier lifestyle are much more successful if everybody in your family (including family of friends) joins in the lifestyle. Livliga is a physical manifestation of the commitment to living a healthier life long term.

Nik: What are the dishes made of? Are they durable?

Sheila: The dishware is made of porcelain. Porcelain is high fired and very durable. Livliga dishes are actually restaurant grade so they are made to last. They are microwave and dishwasher safe, lead free and made of a sustainable material. The packaging is also recyclable and made of renewable resources.

Our glassware is also made of a sustainable material. The glass is etched not painted so the design and fill lines will never wear off. It is chip resistant, microwave and dishwasher safe. The packaging is also recyclable and made of renewable resources.

Nik: Many Foodies and their families are on a pretty tight budget? Why is your product worth it for them?

Livliga products are made to last. We also wanted to offer a product that was beautiful, in fact artist designed, and with different patterns so people would want to use it every day, at every meal (including holidays) and with every one from family to friends. We wanted to package it in a way that people could pick and choose what they wanted to buy and how much. It is something you can keep adding to over time.

We also intend to add new product every year. For instance, we are developing a bariatric set (thanks to feedback we got) that will include a smaller bowl for ¼ and ½ cup servings and our side plate. We are also about to launch our LivSpoons that are a merger of a serving spoon with a measuring cup that will make it even easier to serve up right-sized amounts of food. Simply put, Livliga tableware is a positive investment in your health and that of your families too.

So there you have it! That's what Sheila, co-owner of Livliga Home, has to say about their products. Next we'll hear from a fellow Foodie about what she thought (and she was very thorough and honest!). I'm aiming to get that up later today, tomorrow at the latest. In the meantime, don't forget to show Livliga some love on social media for being a Pledge Sponsor:

BF Review: Celebrate ENS 2-in-1 Protein & Calcium Bars

See if you can identify with this sentiment.
You’re newly post-op and you have a LOT of requirements. You have to get so many calories and so much water and on top of all of that you have to get your vitamins. It’s stressful, isn’t it!
That’s why I’m a big fan of things that can do double duty. Protein shakes that double as liquid intake and possibly your vitamin does, stuff like that.
To that effect, Celebrate Vitamins has a new product offering for you – protein bars that help you get your vitamins!
The good folks at Celebrate sent me their ENS 2-in-1 Protein and Calcium Bars to try. They come in two flavors currently:
  • Caramel Chocolate Crunch: 130 calories, 3g fat, 18g carbs, 5g fiber (so 13 net grams of carbs), 5g sugar, 5g sugar alcohols (combo of polydextrose and malitol), 15g protein.
  • Peanut Butter Chocolate Crunch: 140 calories, 4.5g fat, 17g carbs, 4g fiber (so again, 13 net grams of carbs), 4g sugar, 4g sugar alcohols (again, combo of polydextrose and malitol), 15g protein.
So here’s where I need to make a comment on the nutritional content, because I give this information and people freak out. Yes, there are sugar alcohols in this. If you are particularly sensitive to sugar alcohols you should take heed. If you don’t have a particular sensitivity, from my experience (and keep in mind I’m not a registered dietician) 4-5g of sugar alcohol usually doesn’t do anything too terribly wonky to your system. So take that for what it’s worth.
Each bar also contains 500mg calcium citrate and 333 IU of Vitamin D.

So what’d I think?
  • Smell: Smelled like something sweet. The caramel had a whiff of caramel smell to it. I didn’t pick up any obvious protein smell (and I have with bars before!)
  • Texture: As you can see in the above photo, the bars are coated but beneath that they are sort of like a rice crispy treat. Crispy yet chewy. The texture helped it to not be too heavy. But then again I’m 6.5 years post-op so newbies, take that with a grain of salt!
  • Flavor: I really liked the Peanut Butter Chocolate Crunch (surprise, surprise). I didn’t dislike the Caramel Chocolate Crunch, however, like most caramel flavored things nowadays, I thought it was a tad too sweet (which is saying something coming from me, the person who adds tons of Splenda to everything)
  • Cost/Value: A box of 7 bars is 15.75, which comes out to $2.25/bar. Each bar is about 1.5 oz. I always struggle with what a good “value” is with regards to protein supplements. I mean on the one hand you’re getting 15g protein out of 1.5 oz. of food mass. To give a comparison, 1.5 oz. of chicken is about 8-ish grams of protein, the same amount of tuna is about 5g. So if you really are limited in how much you can eat, it may be worth the investment, especially considering you are getting calcium and vitamin D as well.
Overall verdict: I actually would order the Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch. Why? Because I often forget to take my last calcium/vitamin D supplement! I like these bars and don’t envision it’d take much to convince me to have one as a snack. There’s that other calcium dose I need.
As for the Caramel, I’ll leave that to true caramel lovers. To learn more about all of Celebrate's great offerings, visit their website!
What say you, Foodie Nation? Who’s tried these bars. What did YOU think? I’d love to hear (and I’m sure your fellow Foodies would appreciate additional perspectives). Let me know in the comments!

Why I have Squeaky Cheeks...and you should too!

So this week is shaping up to be a “newbie sponsor” week for the Bariatric Foodie Pledge. Yesterday I introduced you to one of our sponsors, BariMelts (the vitamins that melt in your mouth, not in your pouch/sleeve/…whatever).

Today we’ll learn about our other sponsor this week, Squeaky Cheeks.

I met Rock Toone, owner of Squeaky Cheeks, when I was manning the Foodie table at Obesity Help Conference in Los Angeles (by the way, are you going to #OH2015? It’s in Charlotte, NC this year. Come party with me!).

So Squeaky Cheeks helps with our for-real, for-real “dirty little secret.” When you lose weight rapidly there is skin. That skin tends to rest on other skin. When we move or exercise (or just exist) sweat and moisture can get trapped there and we all know what happens next – ouch!

Squeaky Cheeks is here to help. But how? How is it different than the standard baby powder? And why is it better? I talked to Rock to find out.

Nik: What in the WORLD gave you the idea to come up with this product? And why did you name it Squeaky Cheeks?

Rock: Ok, let’s face it, everybody gets hot, everybody sweats, and everybody stinks.  And we can all agree that can cause lots of problems.

Like chafing, or, repeated rubbing and friction to the skin from something. It can be every bit as painful as a real medical injury. I personally am a world class “chafer.” I’m also a firefighter so chafing is sometimes inevitable. I tried all the standard remedies on my drug store shelf, but nothing held up to the rigors of my job: they all either caked up, fell off or felt squishy and made a mess of everything!  And they only provided temporary relief!

The real problem is not the fact that we sweat or experience friction to the skin, that part is often unavoidable. The problem is the bacteria that proliferate the issue; none of the products on the market address this problem.

I searched for something that would help my predicament and could not find a remedy. Well they say necessity is the mother of all invention, so to meet my need I created Cheeks. You can use your imagination to think about how we came up with that name BUTT if you try hard I’m sure you’ll figure it out!

Nik: Your product doesn't use talcum powder. Why is that important?

I have a long explanation for that, but I think the American Cancer Society says it best. The short version? Talc is a known carcinogen that is directly linked to cancer!

Nik: Can Squeaky Cheeks really help with those pesky rashes and skin irritations?

Rock: It actually can! Squeaky Cheeks has several powerhouse ingredients that help promote healing. One is very special clay has unmatched absorption abilities that allow it to wick sweat away from the skin without breaking down or caking up and lasts for hours. (Nik Note: This is true! I tried some Squeaky Cheeks out while I was manning the Foodie table at Obesity Help conference – in my shoes – and it did not cake up or get gross after wearing those shoes for 10 hours! Moving right along…)

Left: Post-marathon blister, Right: 48 hours later with use of Squeaky Cheeks
And although it’s a powder, it also has the ability to lubricate the skin allowing it to breathe. The most important element is that it has a particular molecule design that contains very powerful negative ions that adsorb positive ions in the body such as toxins, bacteria, and fungus by drawing them into the clay, preventing their growth.  Stop the bacteria, stop foot odor, and eliminate chafing.

Nik: Are you a doctor? Did a doctor help develop this? How do we know everything in this is safe?

Rock: I’m not a doctor, and I didn’t develop this product with a doctor. I have received very positive feedback from the medical community about Squeaky Cheeks and many doctors recommend it as a better alternative when the solution is such that a simple powder is the best remedy for skin irritations.

I do not ever claim to heal anything, but I will say that the natural ingredients in Squeaky Cheeks greatly assist healing – and without the known side effects of ingredients like talc. Squeaky Chees is all-natural and works better than anything on the market!

Nik: C'mon...tell the truth...do you ever blush when you say where you work?

Rock: Here is the deal. If I am going to talk to you about Swass, Swoobs, Rash, Chaff, Odor and any kind of Fa-Munda YUCK you dare to discuss I need to make you smile first….right?
In all seriousness, I am passionate about helping people with Squeaky Cheeks and I stand behind my product! And I have a no-nonsense, unconditional guarantee. If you don’t like Squeaky Cheeks for any reason, I will give you a full refund – and you can still keep the product. Seriously, science and sales pitches aside. It works! So I hope your Foodies will give it a try!

If you’d like to hear first-hand how it works, meet my friend Jeff, a weight loss surgery patient who tried Squeaky Cheeks and loves it.

5 Things You Should Know About Barimelts

This is Tim. Tim the Barimelts guy.  And he wants you to know something. No matter how many times I inappropriately harass him make reference to his boyish good looks, it's really all about the vitamins. (Nods slowly, mesmerized...)

Huh? What was I saying? Yes, the vitamins!

So here's the deal. Newer post-ops. Tell me if this has ever happened to you. You have all these requirements. You're overwhelmed. You gotta get this much water and these many grams of protein and this much exercise and on top of all that? You have to take vitamins!

I know a big problem for me was that I'd take my vitamins and - regardless of if they were chewable or swallow pills - I got full off of them! Freaked me right on out.

Well that's one of the problems Barimelts is trying to solve. So I asked Tim a few questions about what makes them so special and why we should give them a try.

Nik: So there are a lot of bariatric vitamins out there? What makes Barimelts different?

Tim: Other than being “the new kids on the vitamin scene,” the biggest difference is that BariMelts are NOT chewables. They dissolve before you swallow, so there isn’t any extra work from your system to break them down like with most products that are full or partially intact when you swallow. If you want to read more about that process, here's a great explanation on our website

Nik:     So they really do dissolve in your mouth? Exactly how long does this take?

Tim: They do!  Here are the typical times, which can vary from person to person:

Multivitamin:
  • 60-90 seconds with no chewing
  • 30-45 seconds when the tablet is lightly broken up in the teeth and then allowed to dissolve

Biotin / Iron / B-12 Plus
  • 45-60 seconds (these are small enough to be take sublingually).  Faster if lightly broken up in the teeth.
Calcium:
  • 30-45 seconds when lightly broken up in the teeth and allowed to dissolve
Nik: How do you decide on the flavors? And what exactly are Barimelts flavored with? Sugar???

Tim: We chose the flavors that we got the best feedback on.  This often depends on the ingredients in the formula.  For example, the Multivitamin has a lot of components in it, so we used our special blend of natural fruit flavors to get the taste right.

For sweeteners, we only use all-natural (e.g. monk fruit, and sometimes a small amount stevia – never any artificial flavors or sweeteners like sucralose).  All the products are sugar-free except Calcium, which has less than 2 g per sugars serving. Also, all our products contain ingredients that are Gluten-Free, GMO-Free, and Dairy-Free.

Nik: And how many calories do Barimelts have? You know I have to watch my girlish figure!

Tim: All BariMelts are zero-calories except Calcium, which has less than 9 calories per serving.

Nik: Many Foodies have tried (and hated) various vitamins, so understandably they are wary of trying new things. How can they try before they buy a full month's supply? (Did you get what I just did there?)

Excellent! You're a poet and you didn't even know it!

Barimelts offers a sample pack for $2.95 either at our website or on Amazon.  It also comes with a special discount code they can use on their first purchase to get back what they spent on the sample. Now I know there are a lot of Canadian Foodies out there. Unfortunately we're not shipping to Canada yet, but I want you to know we're working on it! Once we're up and running, the Foodie Nation will be among the first to know!

So...there you have it Foodies. Straight from the hunk's horse's mouth!

Remember that Barimelts is one of the prizes up for grabs during week two of the Bariatric Foodie Pledge. For those who are pledging this week, be sure to check-in your goal this weekend (check-in is open Saturday at noon EST until Sunday at noon EST) but if you follow Bariatric Foodie on Facebook or Twitter you should get reminders!

Speaking of...you should also follow Barimelts on Facebook and Twitter to stay up to date with their product offerings and maybe even the chance to help them decide future flavors!

Why I love CLICK Espresso Protein!

CLICK-cocoa, anyone?
This week's Bariatric Foodie Pledge participants are working hard on their goals for the chance to win a special prize pack, courtesy of CLICK Espresso Protein.

So I thought this week was a good week to reflect on my  relationship with CLICK. It's not complicated: I LOVE the stuff! Here's why.

In the Beginning...

Cinnamon- Caramel CLICK Frapp!
Our relationship started in 2009. Back then Bariatric Foodie was two people (myself and my former partner-in-crime, Jen, whose name you'll still see on some BF recipes). I hadn't tried CLICK to that point because I'd just been cleared for caffeine consumption (this was before CLICK had a decaf option). To celebrate, Jen sent me a canister of the Mocha.

It was love at first sip!

The rich, smooth taste was just...wonderful. But me being the macro-nutrient freakazoid that I am, I wanted to play with it to see how I could get the most out of this delicious drink. And the CLICK Frapp was born!

Over the next year or so I was obsessed with CLICK Frapps! It was my goal to have a Frapp for every flavor Frappe drink, at that other place. Here's what I came up with:
The Relationship Solidifies

I love using CLICK in my S'mores Protein Pudding Pie!

So after I exhausted myself with the Frapp idea, I moved onto solid stuff. Mainly, pudding. I was seeing folks pay a lot of money for special protein pudding mixes. I thought to myself, "There has to be a cheaper way!" So I played with my food and came up with my method for making protein pudding.

It wasn't long until CLICK joined the party!

From there I got lots of ideas of where to use CLICK including:
The Relationship Goes Public

So I get Food Network Magazine (as many of you do) and I kept seeing these neat little pull-out booklets. 50 Potato Salad Recipes. 50 Pizza recipes. So I thought to myself, "I wonder if I can come up with 50 Ways to CLICK?" And I did!

I actually wrote up my ideas and contacted Beth and Greg Smith, owners of CLICK and asked if they would help me share these great recipe ideas. And boy did they! The "50 Ways to CLICK" booklet is now available for FREE download on the Click website! It includes all the ideas I shared plus even more!

Many thanks to CLICK!

True fact: CLICK has never, ever said no to a giveaway I've proposed. Not once. They've always been willing to provide samples to me to give away and whole canisters along with fun CLICK bling! They supported the very first Bariatric Foodie Pledge back in 2011 and they support this one too.

PLEASE show them some love for their loyalty to the Foodie Nation. If you haven't already:
